Fanblogs.com: What are Butch Davis's plans for 2009?

  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I could see Davis at Penn State more after the Zook effect takes out Paterno's eventual successor.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
    What Zook effect?
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
When a legend retires/dies their replacement almost always is unable to live up to the shadows they are up against, like Zook after Spurrier at Florida and numerous others.

Whoever takes over for Jo Pa will have a short career there.

I thought The Zook Effect was rounding up the most talent at an unusual place and failing to take advantage of it on the field...

Hey Ben, have you, Kev, and WEA thought about making a Fanblogs Glossary?

    From WEApedia:

ZOOK. zuok v. To be forcifully removed from a coaching position by a website. From Latin, zuke, meaning 'swindled'. Ex. With all his posting on Fanblogs, some accused Clemson Joe of trying to zook Tommy Bowden...

LOL. That's hilarious. I'll take it.

Joe, Terry Don Phillips landed in Oklahoma City yesterday in a twin turbo prop registered to Clemson, around 5 PM, reports from todays paper is that he was here to interview Wilson or Venables...
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Just reported on the news station, it was an iterview with Brent Venables....
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
Thanks for the head's up. I caught wind of this last night from a friend. What are your thoughts on Venables?
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
He shows a lot of emotion on the sideline and will get in your face when he needs to, but if I had to judge him from this year's defense, I'd probably not hire him........but if you look at his record overall, he's been pretty good.....
  • Clemson_Joe · 1 year ago
I hear that he's a really good recruiter, is that true?

I'm wondering who he would hire as coordinators, because it seems like in football today, especially with most of the bigger programs, the coordinators are the ones who do most of the work, and the HC is mostly for recruiting and staff management; more of a CEO if you will.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Yeah, I think he's a good recruiter, although not great, there's been a few that has slipped away that I thought was fully hooked...
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Look on the bright side, Ron. Maybe you could lure Muschump away...
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Good idea, nothing like sticking a fork in Bevo....

    Classic!

I think I'll circulate this amongst some Gator folk I know who will appreciate it....

    GO GATORS!!
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I'd be more easily swayed by that argument if Zook were more successful at Illinois.
  • Ben Prather · 1 year ago
I'm hoping he can earn some credentials in their next game.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I'm sure you are. However, one big win over a big name program per season doesn't give anyone "credentials", unless they couple those wins with conference championships.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
BTW. You do remember The Fightin' Zookers got punked by Western Michigan last Saturday, right? Oh, let me guess...they were "looking ahead".

They should've beaten that team in their sleep.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Nope. The Fightin' Zookers stink it up again.
  • 4cornerz · 1 year ago
Butch Davis will stay put unless Tigers or Vols or Nitty Lions or Irish offers a lot more money than Chapel hill
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
You are right! It should not come as a surprise. He is going to leave if the money is more!
  • Bill Kender · 1 year ago
just words from butch, he stated he was staying at miami also........
  • captcane · 1 year ago
beware carolina, just words from butch, he stated he was staying at miami also.....

Davis said virtually the same things in 2000 at Miami as he's saying now - that he had no intention of going anywhere. Obviously, he wasn't honest then, and although he may have increased his integrity level in eight years, I think you have to discount anything he says. I don't see him leaving just to take another job when he's on the verge of doing something special at UNC. Oh, wait a minute....silly me....the $$$, and Davis has proven before that he's a whore for the money. But what top jobs are open or may become open that would make sense to walk away from a good gig at UNC? Tennessee, Auburn, Penn State, Washington, Texas Tech, Clemson, Kansas State? I don't see anything out there that makes sense....except - for Davis - the $$$.
  • USC1801 · 1 year ago
Texas might want to keep Muschamp. . . if they can.
  • Regan · 1 year ago
I could see Davis at Tennessee...I would really like to see Davis at Tennessee.

    Really...that would be a win-win-win for me...

Who has the biggest checkbook??...thats where he's going. He was building a dynasty in Miami(another one that is....) and ruined it when the late Al Lerner opened up his checkbook with the Cleveland Clowns.
  • PittsburghTiger · 1 year ago
Paterno almost went to Miami? In what universe?
