Fanblogs.com: What are the most prestigious college football programs?

  • Tom_Blogical · 10 months ago
Meh. Looks like a contest for Homecoming King. At least they have something to talk about, I guess.

    First!

Whatever, man. I thought it was clear from my comment that I could care less about this "list". I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and hope that you replied to my comment by mistake, and actually intended to reply to the main article in general, though.

Well, Oklahoma did used to be pretty good back in the 50's. That would probably account for how they got to the top. Bud Wilkinson was a pretty good coach. I think that they won some "Big Games" with him there.
  • OU_Ron · 10 months ago
Yeah, they called him Big Game Bud, or was it Bob....heck I don't know, but I've heard that name before.......somewhere !!!
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 10 months ago
    hahaha!

    OU_Ron:

Finally a guy with a sense of humor. Actually, there have been a few other good coaches by the names of Fairbanks, Switzer and Stoops - who've all won a ton of games. The only thing that they have never been able to do is: "Beat SC"! But, better the ol' "Bullseye" is on your back. I'm good with #2 all-time.
  • NMLSooner · 10 months ago
Thanks for the OU football history lesson TT. Apparently we WERE good at one time!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 10 months ago
    NMLSooner:

You might just have a chance to be good in 09'. Who knows?
  • Tom_Blogical · 10 months ago
    LOL!

The criteria appear to be more comprehensive than what you find in CFBDW's rankings index, but that's both good and bad.

    Things I like:

--Only go back to the true beginning of the MNC--the dawn of the AP poll--one of my big sticklers...

    --Deducts points for negatives

    Things I don't like:

--Fail to factor in true statistical data like winning %, SOS %, total games won

--Should assign a conference difficulty rating, ranked like this.

    --Factor in conference titles

--Remove the 1st round NFL draft picks. what does that have to do with CFB performance?

I'm sure I'll think of something else later...

Sweet! Good to see my cougars up there! Now if they could just get to a BCS bowl game. Come on Manti Teo come to BYU!!!!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 10 months ago
    Coug_Fan:

Sorry man. I've got to put my money on Southern Cal. We already got Martinez and Manti Teo is probably gonna want to follow him over here. He'd be crazy not to.
  • Cougar_Fan · 10 months ago
Curse you trojans!! Don't you already have enough stars at the linebacker spot!! Well I would have to say I can't blame the guy if he does. But don't underestimate the family ties among Polynesians!! I think Sarkisian's departure doesn't help either.
Oh man if we get him though our linebackers will be stacked! I can't handle the suspense!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 10 months ago
    Cougar_Fan:

USC has a very large Polynesian flavor to the team. There is also that great bond here. But, certainly, BYU does have a shot. I don't know why all the great linebackers come here. It might have something to do with Ken Norton Jr. being the LB's coach here. Might have something to do with they all end up being drafted very high. Yeh, there are a ton of them already waiting on the bench. But, hey, you can never have enough guys.

Utah #43. I'll take it, though we have an all time winning record vs. both Colorado and BYU, and the latter is not even close.

I wish the data went back to the 20's.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 10 months ago
I don't have a problem with the data going back to when a team first started playing, as long as the MNCs remain at 1936.

I think Alabama's score is seriously hampered by not including all those Rose Bowls from the 1920s. I think they'd be at least #3 or #4 if they did...

I wish they showed a score sheet for each team so that we could spot check one or two...
  • Cougar_Fan · 10 months ago
Well looking at the teams between 43 and 25 I think Utah won't have much trouble climbing the ladder the way its played the last few years.
  • CaneResurrection · 10 months ago
Miami at number 10? I think that's pretty fair since we just came into prominence in the last 25 years, but behind FSU and Florida? Come on.
  • Cobia · 10 months ago
Miami should be ranked a lot higher. Especially since they were one of the the first teams to spread out the field passing in college football.
  • hrposon · 10 months ago
    It's a joke...
    Army is ranked #39
#10 had the infamous Sports Illustrated article of why they should be banned from CF.
  • Zac · 10 months ago
Army? Ha! Duke is ranked above em at 38! I agree with WarEagle; there are too many important factors missing. Certainly, the over-all record should be considered, but there should also be a factor as to wether or not a program is on the rise, even keel, or on the decline.
  • hrposon · 10 months ago
Right, the folks at ESPN have a lot of time to kill until August. This poll makes the BCS poll look legit.
  • 1Tomcat · 10 months ago
I agree and why begin at 1936, why not the true begining?
Oklahoma once again is # 1 even though they have a losing recoed against the Horns and have lost to Texas 3 outa the last 4 years
I really dont undestand the NFL #1 draft picks criteria even though that factor should help- Texas 43 1st round picks- player picking in 71 consecutive drafts
43 Longhorns currently on NFL rosters
4 Longhorns in the Super Bowl this year
#1 in bowl appearances Alabama- #2 Texas
#1 most wins Michigan- #2 Texas
    8 consecutive 10 + winning seasons
5 consecutive Bowl wins- including 3 BCS bowl wins
Texas Longhorns the real #1 in the B-12

Pitt is the highest Big East school at #27; Syracuse follows at #29, and WVU comes in at #35, barely above Duke & Army. Well, at least they're above VA Tech.

It's amazing what a NC will do for a school's score, given WVU has more wins than either Pitt or Syracuse. Don Nehlan did great things for WVU's program in his 21 years; unfortunately, he also had those 8 consecutive bowl losses, within which there was one (arguably two) blown NC's. Rodriguez brought 4 Big East titles to Morgantown and got em to a couple of big BCS games, but the one year he had a shot at a NC, he was too busy with his head up his butt over the MI job. But, ain't that just the way they say it goes...

    or nebraska
  • Zac · 10 months ago
    Or Duke...
  • OU_Fan · 10 months ago
Its good to see the Sooners on top. I was following these rankings pretty closely and I never in a millions years would have expected to see OU ranked on top. As to the ranking structure, I thought it was pretty fair.
  • hrposon · 10 months ago
Don't get too excited. It's only a poll...
OU was #1 before they played Florida. Had Colt McCoy been the quarterback for OU, they would have won the Glass Football.
  • Ulster62 · 10 months ago
I understand that Notre Dame used to be America's team, but this isnt the 60's any more and Rudy doesnt play anymore. I think some of their prestige has worn off.
