Fanblogs.com: What if Nick Saban hadn't said no to Southern Cal?

  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
"If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas." Once said by John Cooper, former coach, Ohio State. And we all know why he said it.

    Hey! I'm first!

"If your Grandmaw had nuts, you'd have two Grandpaw's". That's my favorite "if" quote.

I think both teams, USCw and LSU, would say that things worked out just fine. It is interesting to think what might have been though. The landscape totally changes then. I would say that Nicky wouldn't have had the success that Petey has had because he wouldn't have been exposed to the rich crop of southern athletes that makes the Southeast so tough. And this isn't a conference comparison so don't even go there. Additionally, this isn't to say that the west coast doesn't have great athletes either. That obviously isn't the case. See USCw's record in Peter's tenure for verification.

He (NS) is a great recruiter...that has been determined. And so it PC (see Lane Kiffin). But it's hard to imagine him having the same success in a crop that maybe isn't as deep as found from Texas to Florida. Keeping this in mind, one would have to assume that the talent in da Pac 10 would've been spread more, increasing the parity in the conference. Then God knows what happens. Maybe Oregon wins a Rose Bowl or two....or even UCLA.

That, my friends, is my totally unedu-macated, shoot-from-the-hip, don't have a clue what I'm talking about opinion. Feel free to bash.

Hey! I'm second! Oh....nevermind.....that's the first loser.

I agree totally with you here; and I believe you do know what you're talkin' about here. Does this surprise you (Me saying this?). But, I believe that you're right on here; and besides, I believe U.S.C. won just one B.C.S. Championship. In 2003, L.S.U. won the B.C.S. National Championship with the Coaches voting the same way. The A.P. felt sorry for U.S.C. and gave it them for a split National Championship. Therefore, L.S.U. won 2/3 of the National Championship in 2003 and we won it unanimously in 2007. Later ........... Geaux Tigers!!!!!!!!! But, I do agree with you totally here, however.

P.S. - On the other hand, I really just skimmed over what you said. But, it sounded good, for the most part ....anyway.

    Pointless thread.
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
Why comment in it then? Kinda like sitting in the fire and complaining about the heat, ya know?
  • Bama_DevilDog · 1 year ago
Well, I felt like expressing the fact that this thread is not that compelling compared to the football season that is going on. Save this kind of stuff for the off season.

Sorry to tell as Nick Saban was born to be in the Southeaster Conference and this is where he should stay. The SEC is the best and will always be the best from top to bottom. No questions about it, no discussions aboutit
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
Sorry, to hear that ......... That's a very bad flaw ........ a tide for life .... I hope you get well ....... Then, you can turn into an L.S.U. Tiger for life ................ You would be well all of a sudden ......
  • tide_for_life · 1 year ago
Nick Saban was borned to coach in the SEC and that is why is back and where he should and all likely hood stay. The SEC is the best conferecence anywhere, no comparision, no discussions and no debates about it. They are hard to beat from top to bottom.

This year the Big 12 is strongest from top to bottom. The S.E.C is just the strongest at the top, where Florida will be after they beat Alabama in the S.E.C Championship game unless Auburn does it first. That's a distinct possibility; and in that case, Alabama might knock off Florida, making everyone knock each other off in the S.E.C., just par for the course in the smash mouth football style, the S.E.C. Like L.S.U. has done this year, I would rather lose 3 games than go undefeated and lose in the S.E.C. Championship game. That's gonna hurt. Please get prepared. It's just a cycle that we're in for Alabama to be where they are. L.S.U. is just down this year. 'I'll be back', like Arnold says, concerning L.S.U. the next couple of years. Nonetheless, Florida must be emotionally prepared to completely dominate the S.E.C Championship game. Talent-wise, there is no comparison. Florida is much better!!!!!!! But, as everyone should know that knows anything about sports, competition is 90% mental and 10% physical. If Florida plays with emotion, Alabama doesn't stand a chance. In that case, it should be a real slaughter. Alabama will be emotionally prepared. So, I do believe Florida must be too. In that case, Florida will win by a couple of touchdowns at least. If Florida plays their best with emotion, Florida could win by as much as 3 or 4 touchdowns, or more.

USC would be #1 right now instead of alabama.
    it's just that simple.

I find this very interesting being a Bama fan.....all I have heard is negative stuff from fans around the world when we hired Saban.....now he is getting some lovin from you guys....what hypocrits...lol ROLLTIDE....he is at BAMA and they love it there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
I would only say that Pete Carroll would have never been hired at USC. But, he may have been hired at Alabama, way back when. Therefore, instead of being a one year wonder, Alabama may have been ruling the SEC for the last seven years. Certainly, things may have been different.
  • Bama_DevilDog · 1 year ago
I guess you know nothing about the good ole boy system that was going on in Alabama during this time. It wasnt untill Dubose screwed everything up that Bama went outside of the Bear's players and coach's. Carrol was never a option for Bama.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
Things work out for a reason, and it's best that Saban turned down the USC job. Pete Carroll is a better fit for the job and the California lifestyle -- laid back and easy going. Saban would have been a fine choice, but he probably would have left after a couple of years to do something else. Alabama will get burned... soon! (ask, Michigan State, LSU, and the Miami Dolphins.)
  • TidePride27 · 1 year ago
    Whats that Dave, ask LSU?
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
    Dave's right!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • TidePride27 · 1 year ago
    um,ok- Good One
  • deathvalley56 · 1 year ago
I know the truth hurts. But, Saban is a drifter ....... Once, a drifter, always a drifter..... However, miracles can and do happen ...... God bless you
  • RBABAU · 1 year ago
USC would have averaged 8-9 wins per year. Saban gets lucky every few years to keep the 8 win average up. Good thing for USC he didn't go, they would be losing to teams like Louisiana Monroe and UAB. I don't think Pete loses to teams like that.

Why is it that when a coach leaves for better opportunities, they call it getting burned? If they he had a losing record there, the fans would be calling for his head...
