Fanblogs.com: Who are the whiniest coaches in America?

  • KristyLSU · 1 year ago
Um, PETE CARROLL didn't make the list?!?!??
  • badgerballer · 1 year ago
The SEC rules yet another poll and sets yet another record!!! Six of the top ten. *rigged*

Did Mike Gundy make this list as a result of just on press conference? Talk about your 15-minutes of fame. If that guy doesn't absolutely blow a gasket in front of about twelve cameras and microphones, has anybody in the nation every even heard of him?
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
I can't believe that Mike Stoops hasn't gotten used to it yet. Everybody else has, except for his brother, of course.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
If Stoops is on the list because he complained about the worst call in history since the replay booth was installed, then so be it. There's not a Coach in America that wouldn't have complained about that, and if they didn't complain, they shouldn't be a coach. Fox needs to stick to their comedy routine on the AM show.....
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
Oh, I almost forgot, OU_Ron hasn't quite got used to it either.....
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
No, I just like to whine.......
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
OU_Ron hasn't got used to what??? From what I noticed, Stoops never whines. When OU gets whipped, he says "we just got whooped." He didn't whine about USC, LSU, Boise State, nor West Virginia. A matter of fact, he gave credit to all of those teams. He doesn't make excuses. Are you saying that Pete Caroll wouldn't be upset if his Trojans were in the same shoes as were the Sooners in 2006 at Oregon? BOOMER!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    OU_Fan:

Don't take it personal. It's a joke me and Ron have been runnin' down since that game against Oregon. We all know that the PAC's zebras really suck. It's just that all of the PAC teams are used to it - and Ron still can't get past it. Man, if you guys had to play in the PAC - you'd all commit suicide. We get cheated out of one touchdown every single game - rather we need it or not. That's what makes PAC-10 football so great! Never a dull moment and upsets all dayum day long!
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
Tommy, I didn't take it personal. As a matter of fact, I don't take anything personal. Being a member of the U.S. Military builds "tough skin." You served and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

    BOOMER!
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
"We get cheated out of one touchdown every single game - rather we need it or not."
Well, I guess that's not whining. It's a little heavy on the conspiratory side. Which must make you to dilusional to be whiny
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
You must not have watched Stoops out on the field in the 2nd half of the 2004 BCS NCG against LSU...The guy should have been THROWN OUT OF THE GAME...

Short of putting a referee in a Full Nelson, he was acting like a complete and total idiot...At halftime, he jumped down Lynn Swann's throat-who though he was a USC grad did the game VERY gracefully before, during, and afterwards-talking about how "Okalomah's the #1 DEFENSE...They're the #1 SCORING defense, but WE are the #1 DEFENSE..."

I've got it on DVD, and trust me, OU_Fan, he came off like a used bottle of Massengil on national television...From within the Dome, he came off like a raving lunatic...

I could say he came off like a whiney beyotch, but that's probably not the best description of the guy, and there are a lot of OU fans here, like yourself, that I'd take flack from...

Being a sometimes kinder, sometimes gentler TE these days, I'll refrain from opening myself up to that sort've withering criticism from the likes of OU_Ron and Boomer...

But, Stoops DEFINITELY belongs on this list...

What I don't get is Miles...Where does he come from on that one?
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
shocker. you think your teams coach doesn't belong on here.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Way to ignore the forest for the sake of the tree...Awesome job...

Even more awesome? The way you didn't answer the question I asked...I didn't get it, still don't get it, and your response doesn't further my gettingness ability, at all...

What makes YOU think he should be on there? After all, I gave two different perspectives of the same event that backed up your coach being there...The least you could do is make up some cockamamey, hair-brained, pie-in-the-sky, daisy-chain logic fueled, non-lucid excuse...couldn't you?

    Guess not...
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
Is your master's degree from LSU some sort of Computer Journalism: with an emphasis on how to get in people face? I didn't say he deserved to be on there. It was more of an observation from what I've read on Fanblogs in the short time I've been on here. It is that you try very hard to cover an obvious bias by burying people with long, boring speeches.
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
    First off:

I don't have a degree from LSU. I went there for 7 years, and never actually graduated before getting into Real Estate Finance...But, I think I'm about 8 hours shy, or so...

Secondly, when have I tried to cover my bias? It's out there like Tom Jones crotch at a concert, dude...

Thirdly...who are you calling boring? :)
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
Unfortunately, I was unable to actually "watch" that game so I can't say I saw what you saw. I was too busy working that night. It was a long night. That was back when I lived in Augusta, GA while enjoying my time at Fort Gordon. I was lucky however because I was able to listen to that game on the radio. Jamarcus Russell was a stud in college. Its a shame that he is being overpaid in the NFL. That game was a tough loss and everytime I visit grandma's house in Monroe, I have to see this plaque that hangs on her wall. The plaque was given to them from a student who was in one of grandpa's classes that he taught. He is a professor at ULM. The plaque has OU and LSU football players painted on it and the score 21-14 can be see at the top. BOOMER!
  • TigerEducated · 1 year ago
Uhh...JaMarcus didn't play in that game, dude...He was being redshirted in 2003...

Alex, I'll take "Who is Matt Mauke for a thousand."
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
TE, I'm surprised you would even give your thoughts on a thread like this, but from your description of Stoops, I would say he wasn't whining, It sounds like he was ready to kick someones ass since our football team wasn't getting the job done on the field........and I agree that Miles don't whine, although listning to him talk, it makes one think that he is about two bubbles off plumb, but of course we all know he's not !!!
  • lbu828694 · 1 year ago
Id agree stoops doesnt seem like that big of a whiner.
I think Dave Wannstedt should be on this list. A friend of mine was being recruited by Pitt a couple of years ago and we played a pickup game of basketball and he couldnt hit anything. He complained of a sore ankle.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Yea, like a beatdown was going to convince your friend to sign with Pitt...

Where did he end up? Probably should have taken Wannstedt and his crappy ankles...
  • lbu828694 · 1 year ago

  • shiguy · 1 year ago
I think I would have actually taken Pitt which is sad coming from a WVU fan.......
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I really cant beleive that Stoops was way down at #8 heck he deserves #1 and Mike Gundy shouldnt be on the list at all. Where in the world is Mark Mangino ? his comments usually cost him money. This list is really a joke Where is Mike Leach? He deserves top ten status
In all honesty Tubberville and Gundy had legediment gripes and shouldnt be on the list
    Mangino and Leach deserve it
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
THANK YOU, Tom! Seriously, though. Tuberville likes to rail against the system here and there, so I knew he'd be in the top 10...

I don't know about Gundy though. Regardless, he's a man and can handle it. He's 41 now...

What in the world are you talking about Tomcat? Doesn't Mack Brown "apologize" to Longhorn fans when he loses to Oklahoma? And didn't he apologize to Longhorn fans after he lost 5 straight games to Oklahoma? Give me a freaking break. BOOMER!
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Tomcat, one of your favorites can be added to this list, the Toads coach Patterson seems a bit frustrated...........

    http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/colleges/...
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
I don't think that TCU gave OU jack. Turnovers are apart of the game. TCU focused on and stop the run. The wide recievers just out ran their defensive backs. I will be the first to say I didn't think OU recievers would be any good. Will they need to run the ball to beat Texas, OF COURSE! But I don't think 1Tomcat will acknowledge nothing. His hatred for Oklahoma does not allow to see anything but bad or non-sense. I dislike Texas but I am no fool. I believed I was the only one on here that said Texas would win all their non-conference games by 40+ points. I was 3 out of 4.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
TC, you know that you wouldn't have Stoops on that list if he hadn't whipped Texas ass so bad in the last 10 years, I'm surprised you didn't have Ron Prince since he thumped Mac two straight !!!!
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
Did anybody see Fullmer last weekend? That guy was hot! He was throwin' anything that he could get his hands on. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall of that dressing room, either at halftime, or at the end of the game - or preferably both. Man, that would have been a tape for all-time.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Dressing room? Is that what you sissies call it out in LA, Tommy?

    :-)
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
Tanning Salon is really what he meant to say..."Sunset Tan", he thought Fulmer was getting a spray on tan after the game, it goes well with orange. Pete gets one you know. The fly on the wall, not for me....
  • SCarDawg · 1 year ago
Go Dawg! That is damn funny. However, do not be too harsh, you might not get invited to So Cal's sensitivity training before PRIDE DAY!
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
Any thoughts on the GA/Bama game. Some are starting to say the weather may be a factor. It may effect Moreno's cuts, he was slipping some on the Arizona Winter Rye last week. I'm not sure I'm worried that much about Moreno, as much as Stafford throws if it's wet, if the timing is off with the recievers, wet ball etc.

Got me there. Out here in Hollywood - we call it a dressing room. I suppose in most parts of the country it's called "the Locker Room". But out here, you know, is where the men are men and the sheep are scared......

Ok that's all well and good but why are the sheep scared?! I mean people always crack West Virginia jokes about sheep and well.. you can figure it out, but damn the way you put that makes it sound....well......WTF are you all doing to sheep out there?!

Actually nevermind....I don't want to know.....
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    shiguy:

Well, I'm glad you asked. But, if I gave you all the details, I'd have to kill ya'. I can say, that with the food shortage that exists in California (as all the food is getting shipped out to 3rd world countries), we have all been enlisted into a TOP SECRET Government program - that is intended to lower the food costs here in California. This program is coming to your neighborhood soon.

So, I hope that your not too shy, as those female sheep sure aren't. The males get a little scarred sometimes though - as it's sometimes hard to tell the difference in the moonlight.

Les Miles? His name doesn't come to mind.
  • The_Central_Scrutinizer · 1 year ago
    I call BS.
If Les Miles whined, it would be something like MD2020, a fortified, DAMN STRONG whine.
You'd *know* you'd had some 'cuz it'd stain your shirt, burn all the way down, give you trouser chili and have you pukin' from the prone position.

  • Zac · 1 year ago
I got tore up a time or 2 on the ole MD 20-20, but Ouzo was my downfall.

By the way, since the article is titled, "Who are the whiniest *coaches* in America", I nominate Jim Boeheim, BB-HC, Syracuse. I don't care if you're talk'n FB, BB, Base Ball, or Volly Ball; nobody whines like him.

Given the spirit of this post, if the guys listed above are the whiniest, I further nominate Howard Schnellenberger for the "Coolest Cucumber" Award. Compared to most of the rest, he seems unflappable. JMHO
  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
Well I like to call a spade a spade and if it were the case, I'd say so but I just don't see Les as a whiner. I think he wears his hat to damn high but...other than that, I can't think of an instance where I thought he was whining.

I actually enjoyed the press conference before the SECCG last year vs. Tenn when he had to squash the Michigan rumors and made the now famous statement about "my damn strong football team". Maybe that's the one that Fox considered him a whiner...IDK.

And I never thought Stoops was a whiner either. Now Spurrier....OMG....the decisive King of whining. He so far out in front of the next guy on the list that there shouldn't be anyone ranked in the 2-8 spots....just Spurrier at No.1 then 7 blanks....then Urban Meyer maybe.

I have never had much of a liking for Les Miles. The main reason is because he coached the Oklahoma State Aggies (Cowboys. I use Aggies as an insult.) But as I have watched Les Miles and the many Les Miles' interviews, I have slowly found a very small (and I'm talking microscopic cellular small) liking for the guy. The clips below give examples in my change of opinion.

Nice clips OU_Fan. I've never seen those. Les is definitely a trip. Hard to actually describe when he gets on that kind of rant. I like it in a Head Coach...especially since he's ours. It's a refreshing change from the scripted politically correct responses that seem to be commonplace (is that one word or two??).

    Apparently whining wins championships...

5 of those guys have a MNC ring and another has a SEC ring and an undefeated season and yet another owns a couple conference championships...
  • Ramblin' Gator · 1 year ago
Looks like a chicken/egg scenario to me...

Either whining REALLY works well because most of those who do it coach winning teams, or coaching a winning team REALLY focuses the microscope on everything you do and raises the perception that you're a whiner.

I feel they left out the biggest whinner and he is not a SEC coach. The Great Bobby Bowden. whinning in 1992 because his team lost to Miami, and he thought they deserved to be there instead of Alabama. Look he had his shot, he lost, move on. Alabama had there shot and mad the most of it. they have been on a down slide for a few years but they have started to turn the corner. We will see if it is complete this saturday againt Georgia, if they are for real of just pretenders.

  • Rio_Jay · 1 year ago
the coach that i'm shocked didn't make the list is Mack Brown.

I mean, didn't Mack become the poster boy for whiny coaches when he made public his complaints about it looking like Cal was going to be invited to a BCS bowl over Texas in 2004?
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Standing up for your team, is not whineing thats coaching and yes they did win the Rose Bowl that year. The Sooners lost their bowl and coaches like Tubberville voiced their dissapointment with the current system, which is not a fair system at all.
Stating facts and building credibility for your team is being a good coach, it is not the same as complaining about things you have no control over like poor officiating and making excuses for losses, like Stoops does after every loss. Bad officiating happens and you have to rise to the occasion to not only whup your opposition, but the bad officials as well. Instead of accepting the fact that the game is over, the Sooner Nation let by Stoops #1 whining coach in the world, couldnt handle the situation that was way out of control.Look guys it was only a game yall lost get over it, but no- there were death threatsagainst the officials and endless bitching & whineing continued on radio & T.V.until they got beat by Texas, then they shut up . Same thing happened when they lost to Texas Tech, remember "we got robbed "says Stoops.
  • OU_Ron · 1 year ago
Tomcat, you're talking crap to a S Cal fan, just because he mentioned Mac Brown doesn't mean that he's a Sooner Fan, you're paranoid pal.....LMAO
But besides that, what you said is bullshit, you act like Stoops made threats to officials, it was some stupid fan, and you blame Stoops for the TV and Radio talk shows. Now it's true, I havent heard Mac complain about too much, but does he whine ??? yea, everytime he opens his mouth, actually it sounds like he's talking thru his nose, thats just a physical problem, probably can be taken care of with therapy JMO...
  • Lennie Collins · 1 year ago
OU Ron...why waste your time talking to someone who is Texas Retarded? Whack Brown make more excuse then a crackhead when he loses, mainly to OKLAHOMA!
He even tried to blame that Texas A&M defensive end slamming Colt McCoy to ground for that 12-7 lost 2 years ago. That happen with less than 1:30 left in the game. I live here and Austin and even the sport announcers stated Whack Brown has to stop making excuse when he loses to Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The fans will not get tired of it as long as Texas wins 10 games and go to a (Lower Tier) Bowl they will be happy. Take notice of 1Tomcat posts...he brags about Texas lower tier bowl victories more than the National Title. They should call him "CRACK" Brown because he gotz the Texas fans "hooked" on that win 10 games and play in the Alamo or Holiday Bowl frame of mind. Texas won the National Title in 2005 and the fans don't care if it takes another 36 years in between titles. Long as Texas get their 10 win and a bowl victory...the Texas fans gotz their fix!
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
Won 6 outa the last 7 bowl games- 4 straight including 2 BCS bowls
BTW thats won 4 straight not lost 4 straight- UT is 2 outa the last 3 vs OU
Also FYI Boise st has also won 4 straight bowl games
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I actually thought it was a Cal Bears fan. No paranoia Ron, just stating facts.
The Head, coach and school president did not really help their cause much, but instead fueled the fire on radio & T.V.- which resulted in alot of ugly stuff that could have been avoided. They should have handled the situation differently and moved on. Not only did Stoops whine after the UO loss, but also complained about refs and clocks-timekeepers after Texas Tech and TCU 05 losses.
Now Mike Leach is alot of fun to listen too and he has the best press conferences and half-time reports, bar none.

Dude, Oregon St is playing lights out right now. Their O-line is blowing SC's defensive line out. I'm talking...5,8 and sometimes 10yrds downfield. And this team is 1-2? That's the bad thing about being #1. You will get everybody's best game week in and week out.

That frosh running back for da Beaver's is cutting on a dime and giving .09c change. It's 21-0 at the half. Can't wait for the 3rd quarter to start. USC should make the adjustments and I look for them to make a game of this. No way Oregon St can keep up this kind of intensity.......or is it?

  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
Yeah GA_Boy. ORST's O-line averages 6ft 2 3/4 while USC D-line averages 6ft 3 3/4. Then factor in the huge corners that the Trojans have compared to the shorter receivers of the Beavers and the descrepancy grows even more. And the running back for ORST is only 5'-6". His older brother is a starting WR (just learned that tonight, btw) and he's listed at 5'-7".

But man, they took it to USC tonight. The Trojans made a big push in the 3rd quarter with 2 TD's but couldn't pull it out in the end. Too many penalties on USC and some were at key points in the game. A couple of horse-collars were called (one I thought was questionable) and a killer personal foul gave ORST the ball inside the 10 and a 1st down.

I will say this though....before anyone gets on the "bash USC" bus, remember...it can happen to your team too. And I'm not speaking about Georgia specifically....I'm talking about everybody.

  • GeauxTigers0107 · 1 year ago
I agree to an extent. Running up the middle and off the right tackle worked well (186 yds rushing by Rodgers) but you have to balance the offense as best you can. If it's the play I'm thinking about in the 3rd quarter, USC had 8 men in the box for that reason and perhaps an audible was called. It was one of the few times that they were stopped on 3rd down though.

If that's surprising, look at WVU last Thursday night against CO. They piled up over 300 yards rushing, but practically none of it came on 3rd down, and most of those attempts were running plays.

By the way, I didn't get to see USC/OR St last night. I was at work trying to figure out why a specific parameter had spiked in a non-essential system, and it would happen while INPO is in and taking a look at things. So, this is the 1st I've had the opportunity to really look at any of this, including who would be playing last night. When I saw that score today, I thought it was a joke. I mean; who are these Beavers, anyway. Sure they crushed Hawaii (There's a surprise!), but they lost at Stanford; then, got crushed at Penn St. They couldn't score more than 14 at Penn St. How did they manage 27 against USC?!? I don't get it.

Well, that takes care of the undefeated USC, big12, SEC arguement

Not necessarily truckdriver. There's still so much football left to play. And with the quality of teams in both the Big 12 and SEC, it's gonna be hard for anybody to not suffer a loss this year. IMO, USC had the best chance to do so but couldn't pull it out.

    Geaux SEC

I stand by my statement. USC is no longer undefeated. Now it might very well come down to a USC,BIG12,SEC one loss arguement.

I have a simple question...where did Les Miles come from???? ( could it be the media doesnt like him because he embarrassed them after the idiots reported he went to Michigan) media bias...no way .....USC, B. Hussein Obama..........any way, why is miles on the list

Who ever put Stoops on the list needs to burn. The #1 person should be Les Miles.

Coach Brown of Texas. Having him cry on national telivision, when his team snubbed a better california team, for a BCS game. It truely is always for the money, never the quality of the team in most BCS games. Out of all the games played, I think I have actually agreed with one true champion.

This is the worst list ever assembled with no factual backing whatsoever.
