I think it would be very helpfull to know at least how many sports that recruiting money is going toward. in the case of USF its probably almost all Football. At Duke its BB. Look at Tenn they post good football teams and have a vicious mens and womens BB teams. Georgia probably puts alot more into Swimming and Diving and Gymnastics than you would initially think but with as many championships as those teams have won I would think that Georgia gets a pretty good bang for the buck

I like these factoids. Mr. Spurrier is doing more with less. I suspect a spending increase is on the horizon, if he asks for it. Noticed how the recruiting class has jumped up Rivals ranks as well. WTG Mr.Spurrier and staff.

Not when you factor in the OU players salaries and automobile deals.
When Barry Switzer went to coach the Dallas Cowboys it was the first time he had to deal with a salary cap.

USF isn't really stingy, it's just that Florida has so many great high school programs that there really isn't a good reason to justify leaving the state very often. I've never understood why UCF recruits the Northeast so much. UF, FSU, and Miami are often in the running for the top-25 players nationally, so that is why they spend the extra dough in Cali and elsewhere, but USF fills the team with solid players. Plus, they don't give too many official visits; only to realistic recruits. I think the coaches can tell pretty quickly if a guy is interested or not. This season, many more SEC recruits are interested in USF, so the budget may have to increase!

Exactly. My thoughts would be they're doing pretty well. Probably 9 of the last 10 Sweet 16's for both men and women. Not to mention a kickass Lacrosse program......

Interesting that Duke is so high. You'd have to presume (based, in part, on their "football" program) that most of the $ is going to basketball recruiting...but then you wouldn't think that it would really take all that much. I mean, if you're a blue-chip high school cager - mens' or women's - and Duke comes calling, you're saying "yes" pretty darned fast.

I had the same thought. If you want to measure the true value, as in bang-for-the-buck, we should divide the Director's Cup ranking by the recruiting cost budget, or the total athletic department budget of each of the ranked schools.

Anyone want to give this a try?

Location has a lot to do with as well. Oklahoma is just apparently more efficient in its recruiting. Can you blame Texas for spending that much? With such a big state, so many lucrative cities, that many students (and therefore alumni), and that kind of support, it doesn't surprise me that they spend that much.

It's sad to think that Duke spends that much in recruit (obviously mostly for BB) yet still is #2 in the state for basketball (considering rivalry wins, championships, etc.) and still has such a horrible football program. UNC beats Duke out in both sports.

Well, if they're going to St. Louis to fly somewhere, that's half their problem. There's a nice little airport called Kansas City International that's a few miles closer.

Seriously, though, K-State has put a lot into basketball recruiting, like Bill Walker and Michael Beasley. I'm sure that increased these numbers tremendously.

I'm not sure WEA. The study takes the cost of all recruiting into account, and Duke does a great job with the BB program. When I first read the post, I thought the costs were football only...HOWEVER...since the cost all recruiting is case here then I'd say that Tennessee, Florida and OSU (listed by rank) are getting the most bang for their buck when you consider the success of all their athletic programs.

Duke clocks in at #9?! Are they nuts?! They are definitely getting the worst bang for their buck. They need a massive overhaul in the recruiting department; or a massive cut. I think it would be better for them to CUT.

yeah, they may have to add more to the budget to get next years head coach jump started, I think this is Ron's last year......
