Fanblogs.com: Willingham out as UDub enters Lane Kiffin Derby

  • Porcine · 1 year ago
How about Pinkel? He used to be the OC there.
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
I thought I saw on ESPN that Pinkel was on the list of potential candidates.
  • JB · 1 year ago
Pinkel is an interesting choice..you think he will be willing to leave MIzzou????? he does lose Chase Daniel (the offense)
  • Porcine · 1 year ago
I don't think he would unless he got a great deal. It would be a lateral move and he would have to build it up like he has already done at Missouri. I think he holds out for better job later.

Just keep Charlie Strong's name out of it...

I don't think Mike Leach will leave TX Tech. Boise St's, Chris Peterson, on the other hand, is a safe bet. Then there's this little discussed, seldom referred to HC at Appy St: Jerry More. He just might be willing to make the leap to a big-time program.

As for making a selection from those available in the NFL, I got 3 names for ya: Robinson, Wannstedt, & Weiss (just to name a few). With little exception, their teams haven't been exactly stellar.

I will give this to WA. At least they gave Ty Willingham a chance.

Just keep that SOB Leach away from Clemson.
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
I hope Texas loses this weekend and Muschamp takes the Clemson job after this season.....

Exactly. U Dub can have Kiffin as well. He fits much better on the left coast, and I don't think that he's proved enough yet. I'm pretty sure I could have success as the OC of USC in past years.
  • blackdawg · 1 year ago
Mora made that dream job statement while he was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons before the Vick problems and Arthur Blank fired him right after he found out. I think that Mora would take that job and quick.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
I can't understand why Leach would ever leave Texas Tech? He's got that program near the top of the charts. What is so great about the Washington job? Who would want to rebuild that mess? Maybe Kiffen would to "get in". Why would Peterson want it? It's not gonna be easy for anyone. Willingham won games at Stanford. He could not do it at Washington. Why? Because Oregon and Oregon State have excellent coaching staffs and very good teams. They are recruiting the state of Washington hard. Washington is a very very down program right now. The task is daunting. The only guy that has the sack for this job would be Kiffen. Nobody else in his right mind would give up a really good program for this. This is one of the toughest jobs that there is gonna be.
  • OU_Fan · 1 year ago
Agreed. What Leach has built/created at Texas Tech is some what amazing. Sure, Tech consistently schedules tons of cream puffs year in and year out. Sure, Texas Tech has never won a Big 12 championship nor have they been close to competing for a national championship. But their bowl record under him is not bad at all and they have beaten OU several times. When their offense clicks, it is fun to watch (unless its against your team.) They are by far the best spread offensive team in college football in my opinion. I can't stand Texas Tech nor their fans but what Mike Leach has created there is special. I can't see him leaving for Washington.....

I totally agree, why leave beautiful Lubbock ?just joking
Dont think that someone who has already invested so much is gonna jump ship while its riding high to rebuild or start all over again- Just cant see it- Texas Tech is the perfect place for this guy were his team gets to play OU, UT, Ok St and A&M every season.
BTW I love his sideline interviews and press conferences they are really purty cool.
One time during the B-12 media day he told the reporters" look guys we are all gonna tell you the same thing"- during a halftime he told the reporter " have a happy halftime" as he continued to run towards the locker room.

I think the big deal about the Washington job is that behind your Trojans, Washington is the most storied and successful program in the Pac-10. It has been proven that you can win big there in several different decades.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    NMLSooner:

Don James built the Washington program into a very good team for very many years. He's been long gone for a long time now. Rick Nueheisel was able to win some games - but I think that happened with James' players. Besides, he really wasn't there for very long. Other than what James had accomplished - Washington has gone way down hill. Like I said, Oregon and Oregon State, were not as good back in the day. Now, those two programs have outstanding coaches, who are recruiting the State of Washington. The Washington job is gonna be very difficult to rebuild. Kiffen could probably be able to work with the QB Jake Locker. Kiffen tried to recruit him to come to USC. If Kiffen could get Locker "up to speed" - it may well help that program immensely. Other than a real fast turnaround, Washington would continue to be outrecruited, and a rebuilding effort could take years. Willingham never had a chance and Washington suffered very many injuries while on his watch. Maybe, that has to do with the SAC coach, but I am not sure. This conference can be very brutal. USC knocked more than eight Arizona Wildcat players out of the game last Saturday. Arizona was physically beat down. Washington has been beat down on many occasion. A "beat down" implies just that. Usually, there can be lots of injuries during one of these games. Washington has suffered more than their share.

They also won a NC in 1960, should have in 1984, ended Miami's NCAA record home win streak, and had an argument to be in the NC game in 2000 against OU. That's why I say they are a good program. They have competed for championships in a lot of decades.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
    NMLSooner:

You are very correct about their tradition. They do have very good football players in the State of Washington - at least enough to field a team. But, where they are today, is a long way from where they used to be at.

The whole state of Washington is at a low as far as sports go!

Auburn sucks so bad this year that I can't even offer the obligitory 'Tuberville' to (insert name here) reference...

    Clemson, maybe?
  • Tom_Blogical · 1 year ago
Whatever happens with Tuberville, make sure you get Auburn nation to dogpile on their DC. Chain him in the film room in the off season or something to prevent him from leaving.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I dunno, Tom. After that defensive effort against WVU, I was thinking about chaining him up, then pistol-whipping him...
  • Zac · 1 year ago
Let's look at this realistically. What you observed from WVU is nothing short of what they're capable of doing offensively. I also think they got tired; there was some shoddy tackling there especially in the final quarter. Devine, on the other hand, was unconscious. He simply blew past would be tacklers. He as much surprised me as he did your boyz defense.

It was a bad game. There are better things to come. I agree with Tom; don't let that DC go. (Besides, I don't want ya take'n Kirelawich from us.)
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
An Auburn fan on a homer site referred to him as a "greased midget". :-)

    WEA:

What's your take on the game this Saturday? I'll be there.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
I predict that someone will not be bowl-eligible afterwards...

Our backs are to the wall. If we play all 4 quarters, we could win. We've had double-digit leads in every game we've played this year, but we just can't finish with any strength. If you guys play like you did against Florida, we don't have a chance.

However, it would be sweet to go 3-0 against the Magnolia State this year...
  • Hotty_Toddy · 1 year ago
I believe if Jevan Snead plays at the very least a half-assed game with no interceptions, we could take it. Then again, he's very capable of pulling another Vanderbilt game....
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
We're capable of pulling a Vandy game, too...

    :-)
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
Hey WEA, how can AU fans be so upset with Tubberville? Six straight against Alabama, and an undefeated season, you guys have a pretty good coach having a bad year.
  • War_Eagle_Atlanta · 1 year ago
Sure, I agree. I'll spot Tubs a bad year or two, but so many CFB fans, Auburn's included, want that instant gratification that comes with winning every year and subscribe to a heads must roll mentality. They lack the foresight to imagine if we were to punt Tuberville, who would we get to replace him right now? And who would do a better job over another 10 year period? Tubs is a victim of his own success. Give the fans everything and they only want more...

Fans are so fickle these days and it disturbs me. This is my 24th season as an Auburn fan, and I've only suffered through 4 losing seasons. It's the suffering from fair weather fans that really gets to me...
  • 1Tomcat · 1 year ago
I totally agree, just like Phil Fulmer the guy is one of the winningest coaches in CFB and one bad season just not really justify all the negative B/S- or should we say how soon they all forget-crazy
  • NMLSooner · 1 year ago
Auburn better be careful. This is the kind of stuff that makes a coach take a "lateral move" coaching position, just so he's appreciated for what he does well, and all the money in LA (lower alabama) won't guarantee success.
  • Tommy_Trojan · 1 year ago
How did this one turn into another SEC thread? This is pretty amazing. Kevin goes out of his way, to give some others a chance to talk about something, and yet the SEC "homers" have to jump in and hijack this thread also. Don't any of you people know about anything other than SEC football? I know - I know - what else is there?
  • TheMayor · 1 year ago
    Tommy,

Taking back the thread! Who do you like this weekend...Cal or Oregon?

How about Stanford as a 30+ favorite over WSU...that's ridiculous.

Whoever takes over at UW I certainly hope they can bring the program back. It's no fun to hate the Dawgs when they are so pathetic.

By the way, you mentioned our recruiting in WA. Well we may be trying but we aren't signing much. Only four players on the roster of 108 players are from WA. One of those is from Vancouver which is just Portland OR North.
